World Environment Day 2019
The United Nations designated 5th June as World Environment Day. The celebration of this day provides us with an opportunity to broaden the basis for an enlightened opinion and responsible conduct by individuals, enterprises and communities in preserving and enhancing the environment. Since it began in 1974, it has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in more than 100 countries. The Department of Environmental Management, William Carey University, Shillong, in collaboration with the NSS-Unit William Carey University organised a program to celebrate the World Environment Day on the 4th of June as 5th of June 2019 was a holiday on account of Eid-ul-fitr. The theme for the World Environment Day 5th June 2019 was “Air Pollution”. The program was chaired by Dr.FebreenaLyndem. The program began with the welcome address given by the Honourable Registrar Dr. Soma Bhowmick who highlighted more on the theme of this year. The welcome address was followed by a speech of Dr.Maitreyee Roy, where she spoke on the causes and problems of air pollution.
The program continued with the extempore speech competition conducted by Dr.Satabdi Banerjee which was participated by the students of the different departments of the university. Along with the extempore speech competition, a painting competition was also held with the theme of Air Pollution. Both the competitions were judged by Dr. Gita Piyal, Dr.BalenshaNongrum and Dr.Maitreyee Roy. After the competitions the students were shown a short documentary by Al Gore entitled -Global Warming. The documentary focussed on the effects of global warming with special reference to Antarctica. The program was concluded with the prize distribution given by the Registrar, Dr. Soma Bhowmick. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr.Satabdi Banerjee which was followed by the National Anthem.
WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY CELEBRATION
On the 5th of June, 2019, William Carey University got an invitation from Smti.R.M.Kurbah, IAS, Deputy Commissioner cum Chairman, District Project management Unit, Ri-Bhoi District, with the Integrated Basin Development and Livelihood Promotion Programme, Nongpoh, to collaborate with them in celebrating and observing the “WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY” at Byrnihat. They requested the University to give a Street performance based on the topic of “Air Pollution”.
The University decided to send 10 NSS volunteers and two Program Officers – Miss.Idahunheimonmitre Thubru (Assistant Professor) and Mr.Mankhraw (Assistant professor), for the program. At Byrnihat, the program started at 10:30, Shri.LamboriusKharkongor was the Chairman, and a welcome speech was given by Smt.DeivorineRumnong, which was followed by a short speech from the Secretary of the Village Headman. The Chief-Guest, Mr.Nongrum, the BDO of Umling delivered a short speech on the effects of Global warming. Next, the NSS Volunteers performed a street play stressing on the importance of tree plantation, which was followed by speeches on air pollution from the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board. The program came to an end with a vote of thanks from Smt.EsterlyneKharnaior. There was also tree plantation programme and ‘Free Vehicle Testing Camp’ as part of the observing the theme of “Air Pollution”.
